AI Receptionist Pricing Compared by Billing Model
Every AI receptionist on the market bills you one of four ways: per minute of call time, per call or action, a flat monthly subscription, or a single one-time fee. Over three years those four models produce totals between $300 and $14,300 for the same job. The table below shows each model, what it means when you are the one paying it, and the arithmetic.
What each billing model costs over three years
Read the last three columns as cumulative totals, not annual figures. The one-time row does not grow because there is nothing left to charge after the build.
| Billing model | What it means for you | Representative rate | Year 1 | Year 2 total | Year 3 total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per-minute AI service A rate per minute of call time, usually with a monthly bundle and overage above it. |
Scales with how busy you are. A storm week or a viral post costs you more, with no matching rise in revenue. | $50/mo bundle | $600 | $1,200 | $1,800 |
| Per-call or per-action AI service A rate per answered call, sometimes plus fees per booking or per lead captured. |
You are charged more precisely when the agent works well. Success raises the bill. | $75/mo typical | $900 | $1,800 | $2,700 |
| Flat monthly subscription One monthly fee for a tier, with limits on minutes, contacts or seats. |
Predictable month to month, but it never stops, and you own nothing at the end. | $99/mo tier | $1,188 | $2,376 | $3,564 |
| Agency build plus retainer A large one-off build fee, then a monthly maintenance retainer. |
The build is custom, but the retainer usually outlives the value of the maintenance. | $3,500 + $300/mo | $7,100 | $10,700 | $14,300 |
| Botlery, one-time build A single fee. The agent runs on your own provider accounts, so it is yours to keep. |
No meter, no subscription, no renewal. Your only ongoing cost is your own provider usage, typically a few dollars a month. | $300 once | $300 | $300 | $300 |
How these numbers were produced. Each total is the representative monthly rate multiplied by 12, 24 and 36 months; the agency row adds a $3,500 build to a $300/month retainer. The rates are illustrative of each billing model, not quotes from any named vendor, because published prices change frequently and a stale quote is worse than none. Botlery's own figures are exact and current as of August 2026. Check any vendor's live pricing page before comparing.
Why the model matters more than the sticker price
A $49 per month plan reads as cheaper than a $300 one-time build right up until month seven, and it never stops. The question worth asking is not what a provider charges this month but what the same arrangement costs by the time you have had it a while, and what you hold at the end.
There is a second, less obvious problem with metered billing. Per-minute and per-call pricing charges you more precisely when the agent is doing its job. A busy month, a seasonal rush, a post that does well, all of them raise the bill at the exact moment you would rather be investing the difference. Flat and one-time pricing decouple your costs from your success.
Where a subscription genuinely wins
This page would be dishonest if it only argued one way. A managed subscription is the better choice when you want somebody else to own the maintenance permanently, when your call handling changes often enough that ongoing tuning is a real service rather than a line item, or when you would rather expense a small monthly cost than approve a larger one-off. That is why Botlery sells a managed chatbot at $10 a month or $100 a year alongside the one-time builds. Different businesses want different things.
What we would not recommend to anyone is a per-minute meter on a business line whose volume you cannot predict.

| What you get | Price | How it is billed |
|---|---|---|
| AI chatbot, fully managed | $10/month or $100/year (2 months free) | Monthly or yearly, cancel anytime |
| AI chatbot, built on your own accounts | $200 one-time | Pay once, you own it |
| AI voice agent on your website | $300 one-time | Pay once, you own it |
| AI phone agent answering your phone line | $300 one-time | Pay once, you own it |
No per-minute meter and no per-caller fee. On a one-time build your only ongoing cost is your own provider usage, typically a few dollars a month paid directly to the provider rather than to Botlery. Agencies charge $2,000–$7,000 plus $300+/month for comparable work. Every build starts with a free working agent trained on your real business, and you pay only once you are happy with it. Pricing is quoted in USD and we work with businesses anywhere in the world.
How to check any quote you are given
Three questions settle almost every comparison. What is the billing unit, and what happens to my bill in a busy month? What is included against what is billed as an add-on, particularly lead capture and booking? And what do I actually hold at the end, a tool I keep or access I rent? Run every option through those three and the totals above stop being abstract.

Frequently asked questions
Which AI receptionist billing model is cheapest over three years?
A one-time build is cheapest over any period longer than a few months, because it stops charging. Botlery's AI phone agent or voice agent is $300 once and a chatbot is $200 once, against $600 to $14,300 over three years for the metered, subscription and agency models in the table above. The trade-off is that a subscription includes ongoing management, while a one-time build hands you something you maintain yourself or ask us to change.
Why do most AI receptionists charge per minute?
Because the underlying speech and language APIs bill the vendor per minute, so passing that through protects their margin at any call volume. It is a rational choice for the vendor and an unpredictable one for you: the months where the agent earns its keep are exactly the months you are billed most.
What does Botlery actually charge?
An AI chatbot is $10 a month or $100 a year fully managed, or $200 one-time built on your own accounts. An AI voice agent on your website is $300 one-time. An AI phone agent that answers your business line is $300 one-time. There is no per-minute meter and no per-caller fee, and nothing is paid up front โ we build a working agent trained on your business first, you test it, and you pay only if you keep it.
Is a cheap AI receptionist worse than an expensive one?
Not by price alone. What decides quality is whether the agent is trained on your real services, prices and policies, whether it captures every lead, and whether it hands off cleanly when it does not know something. Those are build decisions, not billing decisions. The honest test is to talk to one before paying, which is why we build yours free first.
How were the three-year totals calculated?
Pure arithmetic on the representative rate shown in each row: monthly rate multiplied by 12, 24 and 36 months, with the agency row adding a $3,500 build to the retainer. The rates are illustrative of each billing model rather than quotes from any named vendor, because published prices change often. Botlery's own figures are exact and current.
