How to Add an AI Chatbot to Your Website

Updated June 2026 ยท 5 min read

Adding an AI chatbot to your website is easier than most owners think. You have two real paths: do it yourself with a snippet, or have it built and installed for you. Here's how each works, on every major platform.

The 5 steps (any platform)

  1. Decide what it should do. Answer FAQs? Give quotes? Capture leads? Book appointments? Most small businesses want all four.
  2. Train it on your business. Feed it your services, prices, hours and policies so it answers accurately instead of guessing.
  3. Install the snippet. A chatbot is added with a small piece of code (an "embed snippet") that goes into your site once and loads the widget on every page.
  4. Connect your leads. Route captured names, phones and emails to your inbox and a Google Sheet so nothing slips through.
  5. Test & go live. Chat with it as a customer would, fix any answers, then publish.

How it works on each platform

PlatformHow you add it
WordPressPaste the snippet in the footer, or use a "header & footer" plugin
WixAdd a Custom Code / HTML embed in site settings
SquarespaceAdd it via Code Injection (footer)
ShopifyPaste into theme.liquid or use an app block
GoDaddy / customAdd the snippet before the closing </body> tag

In every case it's one small snippet โ€” no rebuild, no developer required.

DIY vs done-for-you

DIY is cheap in dollars (often just a few dollars a month in AI usage) but costs time: you'll wire up the AI, write prompts, set up lead capture and booking, and handle the install. Great if you're technical. Done-for-you means a provider builds it, trains it on your business, and installs it for you โ€” usually live within days. Don't forget the phone

A chatbot catches the customers who message your site. The ones who call โ€” and reach voicemail โ€” are still slipping away. If that's a big part of your business, pair your chatbot with an AI voice agent that answers the phone too. See AI Chatbot vs AI Voice Agent to decide.

The bottom line

Adding an AI chatbot is a one-snippet job that works on every platform, and you can be live in days. Do it yourself if you're technical; otherwise let a provider build, train and install it so it's capturing leads by the end of the week. Either way, try a live one first to see what good looks like.
